Sustainability

Architecture as the Foundation of Sustainability

At Kontio, we believe architecture is key to a sustainable future. By designing versatile, adaptable buildings, we ensure they can evolve with society’s changing needs, lasting for generations. We prioritize responsible design and carefully selected materials, creating environmentally friendly, long-lasting, and energy-efficient buildings that minimize environmental impact while leaving a strong legacy for the future.

Sustainability and circular economy in Kontio's value chain

1. Arctic pine – the renewable and resilient raw material

Kontio uses Arctic Pine from Northern Finland’s clean, PEFC-certified forests — a renewable, high-quality material that supports ecological and social sustainability. Arctic Pine acts as a long-term carbon sink, first in nature and later as a building material. Kontio’s factory is strategically located to reduce transport distances, and close collaboration with the largest suppliers ensures efficient, low-waste sourcing. The company is also committed to complying with the upcoming EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).

2. Kontio log houses – built for durability, designed to last over 100 years

Kontio buildings are designed to last over 100 years, combining more than 50 years of WoodHow expertise with durable, safe, and innovative solutions. Made from solid, breathable massive logs, these structures are built to endure for generations, offering ecological, economic, and structural sustainability with minimal maintenance.

3. State-of-the-art production – every log for a sustainable future

Kontio’s state-of-the-art production combines technology and craftsmanship to maximize efficiency and minimize waste. Log elements are precisely planned and manufactured, and most of the minimal production waste is reused internally. For us, every log serves a sustainable future!

We ensure that nothing goes to waste — materials Kontio cannot reuse are redirected, for example, to the energy and paper industries.  Our side streams even generate more energy than the factory consumes!

4. Efficient and sustainable construction with Kontio's ready-to-install logs

Kontio log houses are constructed from high-quality, ready-to-install log elements that are lightweight and efficient to transport and assemble. These installation-ready logs feature finished, natural, beautiful wall surfaces, with no additional layers needed. This saves time, materials, and costs, without compromising the quality of the ecological and sustainable log house.

5. Log homes built to last – strength and sustainability for generations

Kontio’s log homes, made from Arctic Pine, are strong, low-maintenance, and built to withstand even future climate challenges from increased humidity and strong winds to earthquakes and temperature fluctuations. The solid log structure provides natural insulation, boosting energy efficiency and year-round comfort. Easily adaptable and repairable throughout their life cycle, log buildings are a long-term, sustainable investment — proven by enduring log structures like the Nothnagle Cabin, built by Finnish settlers in the 1600s in New Jersey, USA. It’s still standing today!

6. Arctic pine log – the recyclable classic: natural, sustainable, and built to last

Massive log houses are natural, sustainable, and highly durable, easily disassembled and relocated thanks to their strong, load-bearing structure. These logs can be reused in new projects or recycled into beams, columns, or raw materials for the other industries.

As an essential carbon sink, the logs maintain a long lifecycle, adapting to new purposes and locations across generations.

7. Logs – beyond use

Arctic pine logs, when properly maintained, last for centuries and are always best reused in their original form or recycled into other building components. At the end of their long lifecycle, they can be used in renewable energy, biocarbon production, or the pulp and paper industry, for example.
