Aisbois, which makes use of Kontio’s offcuts, wins innovation challenge for circular wood products
At the annual Puupäivä event on October 30, the awards for the year-long innovation challenge were presented. The winner was Aisbois, an open-minded duo Petteri Berg and Kuisma Hurtig from Rovaniemi Petteri Berg and Kuisma Hurtig — whose company utilizes offcuts and rejected products generated in Kontio’s production and turns them into furniture and design items.
The seeds of the collaboration between Kontio and Aisbois were sown a few years ago through Berg’s master’s thesis for Kontio, “Circular Economy in the Value Chain of a Log House Manufacturer”, and the circular economy roadmap created for Kontio on its basis. The roadmap is an excellent tool for implementing concrete and sensible actions toward adopting and applying circular-economy principles in a comprehensive way. One such action is reducing waste — already in use at Kontio — and utilizing the remaining waste as raw material for longer-cycle products that also replace more emission-intensive and non-renewable alternatives.
