Healthy living in a log house

Indoor environments have a very important influence on health and wellbeing because people spend about 90% of their time indoors, either at home, at school or at work. That’s why every Kontio house is an example of healthy living. In fact, healthy living and wellbeing is the main focus our research and development work.

Kontio log houses are also designed to last. They are made from Arctic pine (Kontio ArcticPine™), which, because of its slow growth, contains a high percentage of heartwood. This heartwood is strong and durable and also has antibacterial properties. Kontio's homes are made from massive, completely natural wood, and our structures are designed to prevent the condensation of moisture, even in variable temperatures and conditions.

Kontio ArcticPine™ is responsibly sourced and comes from sustainably managed Finnish forests, where more wood grows than is harvested each year.

Long-lasting with durable Arctic Pine

Massive wooden logs are a beautiful, ecologically-friendly material that give your house a uniquely warm and welcoming feeling. Log houses are comfortable and healthy to live in all year round, and Kontio log houses in particular have many special properties which make them a strong, safe and long-lasting choice.

Log house building has a long history and the oldest log houses in Scandinavia are 800 years old. A special type of wood is the secret behind the longevity of these grand old wooden houses – northern slow-growth pine. Kontio houses are made from the same special kind of wood – Kontio Arctic Pine™. This grows close to the Arctic Circle in the clean forests of Northern Finland and its slow growth maximises the amount of extremely durable heartwood in every log. Arctic pine heartwood is far more durable than that found in southern trees and in species like spruce.

Tested For Safe Living

Kontio has been granted a European Technical Approval (ETA) to show that Kontio log houses meet the requirements of ETA-05/0119. This approval covers many aspects of product safety including specifications related to moisture, load-bearing and fire. Thanks to this ETA and our own quality control systems, Kontio houses are CE certified. With the CE mark, you can be sure that Kontio log houses comply with all the required health, safety, and environmental protection standards. In addition, our log houses are known for withstanding extreme conditions around the world, such as massive snow loads and typhoons, as well as earthquakes. With Kontio, you can rest assured that you have chosen the safe option for all conditions.

Energy Efficient Technology

Kontio log houses are carefully designed to fulfil the energy efficiency requirements of today’s residential housing. We choose the best structural solutions to meet the demands of low-energy construction including log type, corner design, sealing technology, window glass, air ventilation and heat recovery systems, as well as additional insulation. The thermal insulation capacity and the U value of walls can be improved using an additional insulation structure. This can be installed on either side of a log wall, and it can also be coated with alternative surface materials to create a variety of attractive interiors and facades.

Airtight Construction

Another factor that reduces the energy consumption of Kontio log houses is their airtightness. Airtight structures improve living comfort while lowering costs thanks to decreased energy consumption. The excellent airtightness of Kontio log houses is due to many factors, including our state-of-the-art log profiles and our double sealing technology. Our double sealing system is designed especially for rectangular logs. It continues unbroken along the entire length of the log and it is used together with pre-cut log corner joint insulation to ensure complete airtightness. We use special details and sealing systems to ensure airtight windows and structural joints, too. For houses with round logs, we have also developed special profile-fitting airtight sealing solutions.

The airtightness of Kontio log houses has been measured in whole house tests and the resulting N50 values of less than 1.0 1/h are excellent.
