Responsibility Is Reflected in Everyday Choices at Kontio

At Kontio, responsibility is an essential part of everything we do. It is a way of building, operating and taking responsibility for people, the environment and the future. It starts with carefully selected raw materials and continues all the way to a finished Kontio building and its long service life.

Our approach to responsibility is guided by the ESG framework, which brings together environmental (Environmental), social (Social) and governance (Governance) aspects as one integrated whole. In practice, this means making sustainable material choices, safeguarding the wellbeing of people and the environment, and operating in an open and transparent manner. We are committed to doing things right – now and in the future.

Our sustainability work is based on measurable and monitored factors. We track, among other things, energy and material use, the utilisation of side streams, and the lifecycle impacts of buildings as part of our ESG approach and sustainability reporting. This ensures that development is driven by data, not assumptions.

Renewable Wood from Northern Finland

The material used in Kontio log buildings is Finnish Arctic pine, which grows slowly in the clean natural environment of Northern Finland. The slow growth results in dense, strong wood with exceptional durability and a long lifespan. The wood we use comes from PEFC‑certified and controlled forests, where forest management is based on ecological, social and economic sustainability.

PEFC certification ensures that forest biodiversity is protected, forests are regenerated after harvesting, and the origin of the wood is fully traceable throughout the entire supply chain through independent verification. Raw materials are sourced close to Kontio’s production facility, which reduces transport distances, lowers environmental impact and supports responsible local production. A responsible product starts with a responsible raw material.

Log Structures that Store Carbon

Wood is nature’s own carbon sink. In Kontio’s solid log buildings, carbon is stored within the structures for the entire lifecycle of the building, potentially for hundreds of years, effectively keeping it out of the atmosphere. Responsibility is made visible by examining how much carbon a building stores, what kind of carbon handprint it creates, and how the material can be utilised at the end of its life, for example through reuse in new construction or energy recovery. In this way, responsible building is not just a principle, but a structural and tangible climate action.

Choosing a Kontio log building is a sustainable, future‑oriented choice that supports climate goals, healthy indoor living and long‑term value. Sustainability does not stop at production, it continues through responsible decisions throughout the entire lifecycle of the building.

A Controlled and Responsible Production Chain

Kontio manufactures your log building in a controlled and responsible manner from start to finish. At our state‑of‑the‑art factory in Pudasjärvi, advanced production technology is combined with decades of wood expertise, ensuring consistent quality and precise use of materials.

Wood side streams are systematically utilised as part of the circular economy, either on‑site for internal use or through partners for further processing and energy production. This ensures that every log is used wisely, and a significant share of the energy required for log production is generated from renewable energy created within Kontio’s own production processes.

A Building Designed to Last for Generations

Kontio buildings are designed to last for more than 100 years. Log wood is a naturally breathable and healthy material that offers good energy efficiency and requires only minimal maintenance. Structural durability is retained decade after decade, even in northern conditions.

A long service life is one of the most important indicators of sustainability. When a building serves its users across generations, the environmental burden is significantly reduced. The result is a home that stands the test of time, everyday life and changing needs.

At Kontio, sustainability is built on long‑lasting solutions, measurable actions and a genuine commitment to doing things right today and for future generations.

A Healthy and Safe Choice for Everyone

A responsible building is, above all, about good living and the safety of the people who use it. Kontio’s log structures naturally create a balanced and healthy indoor climate without complex construction solutions. Pure solid wood, clear structural principles and carefully tested solutions form the foundation of a building that is both safe and built to last. A Kontio building is a place where people can truly feel well – today and well into the future.

Caring for People and Responsibility

At Kontio, responsibility extends to people just as strongly as it does to our products. We invest in safe and fair working conditions, equality, and the continuous development of our employees’ wellbeing and expertise. The same principles apply to our partners and the entire supply chain. Ethical conduct, transparency and trust guide our decisions at every level.

Good Governance Builds Trust

Kontio’s responsible operations are based on clear leadership and an ESG‑driven approach. We operate transparently, follow ethical business principles, and take care of data protection and responsible reporting. For us, responsibility is long‑term work that we continuously develop. We do not do it merely to meet regulations, but because it is the right thing to do.

We develop our sustainability efforts systematically and report on progress openly. Kontio’s operations are guided by recognised responsibility principles, certifications and the ESG framework, which together ensure a reliable and transparent operating model.

For us, sustainability is not a finished state but an ongoing process. We develop our operations in a systematic and determined way to meet increasingly demanding environmental and responsibility requirements – now and in the future, together with our customers and partners.
