SmartLog – technological advancement in log construction

Kontio log homes and villas can be built using either traditional laminated logs or the innovative SmartLog, which enables more demanding architectural structures. There are differences between non-settling logs. Kontio’s SmartLog is the most advanced non-settling log on the market, and its structure is design-protected. SmartLog is manufactured from start to finish at Kontio’s factory in Pudasjärvi, using Arctic pine.

SmartLog brings additional possibilities to log construction

Kontio’s SmartLog is the most advanced non-settling log on the market—and truly non-settling even when environmental conditions vary. This stability is achieved through vertical wooden lamellas integrated into the log structure.
SmartLog makes construction easier and more cost-efficient: it allows you to combine different materials without the need for settlement allowances. It also eliminates the adjustment and maintenance measures typically required in traditional log buildings.
Minimalist, modern details—without bulky trims or adjustment mechanisms—are easy to achieve with non-settling SmartLog logs.
Split-level designs are easier to implement than ever. Complex roof structures are possible, and large window surfaces and doors can be integrated seamlessly.
Kontio’s SmartLog is the safest choice for building a non-settling log structure. According to tests conducted by VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, its load-bearing capacity and water tightness are excellent.
SmartLog uses metal fasteners only to connect the logs to each other. Its non-settling property is not based on the load-bearing capacity of metal connectors. The logs are secured with screw dowelling, and their non-settling performance is achieved already during installation.

Truly non-settling

Kontio’s SmartLog is a truly non-settling log. Its non-settling performance is achieved in the only way a genuinely non-settling log can be made: by orienting part of the log’s lamellas vertically. In traditional laminated logs without vertical lamellas, wood settlement cannot be eliminated, for example through drying.

Kontio SmartLog is therefore a genuinely non-settling log—even when environmental conditions vary.

Design-protected structure

The SmartLog log features a design-protected structure. Airtight construction requires well-engineered solutions, and in SmartLog the sealing gasket is positioned at the vertical non-settling lamella, ensuring optimal material tightness.

The load-bearing vertical lamella is placed close to the surface of the log, providing excellent vertical rigidity and, consequently, superior load-bearing performance.

Architectural freedom

The SmartLog non-settling log enables highly innovative solutions in architecture and building design thanks to its structural properties.

Combining logs with other materials creates new possibilities for interior design and the exterior appearance of the building. Minimalist, modern details—without bulky trims or adjustment mechanisms—are easy to achieve with non-settling log construction.

Tested structure

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland is one of Europe’s leading research and technology organisations, providing research and innovation services that enhance international competitiveness for companies and the public sector.

The load-bearing capacity and rigidity of the SmartLog structure were tested at VTT in 2017, and the results showed that SmartLog has excellent load-bearing performance.

In addition, VTT tested the air and water tightness of Kontio SmartLog log joints and connections in 2017, with results confirming equally excellent airtightness.

Freedom of choice in installation

Because Kontio SmartLog is a truly non-settling log, you are not required to rely on Kontio’s factory installation when building your home or villa.

We always recommend choosing Kontio installation.
