Kontio Healthy Living

From healthy nature to a healthy home

Healthy Living - inspired by nature

Kontio Healthy Living is based on one simple idea: a healthy home is born from healthy nature. Solid log structures, pure Arctic pine, and carefully researched building solutions create a home where it’s good to breathe, live, and recover.

Naturally healthy indoor air

In a Kontio log home, the indoor air remains pleasant throughout the year. Solid log structures naturally regulate humidity and temperature, creating an optimal microclimate without complex technical solutions. This reduces the stress on the body caused by dry air, excess moisture, and temperature fluctuations.

Finnish studies have shown that people living in log houses perceive indoor air quality as better than those living in stone or timber-frame houses¹. In a Kontio log home, it is simply easy to breathe.

Arctic Pine – nature’s own protective material

At the heart of the Kontio Healthy Living concept is Kontio Arctic Pine, slow-grown pine from the northern regions. Its high proportion of heartwood makes the log exceptionally durable and naturally antibacterial. Pine contains natural extractives that resist moisture, microbes, and fungi without added chemicals. These properties help create a comfortable and balanced living environment, which many people with allergies or sensitivities find especially pleasant.

Log houses offer a pleasant sound environment

Solid log construction not only looks and feels good, it also sounds good. Kontio log buildings offer a calm and comfortable acoustic environment where sounds are naturally softened, without echo or harshness. Good acoustics support concentration, learning, and recovery.

For this reason, log buildings are especially valued in schools, daycare centres, and other care and learning environments.

Wood reduces stress and supports well-being

Nature has a calming effect, and log walls brings it into everyday life.  Research shows that wood surfaces indoors reduce stress, support the body’s natural balance, and promote recovery. When an environment feels calm and restorative, overall wellbeing and sleep quality can improve.

The Kontio Healthy Living approach is based on researched knowledge of the wellbeing benefits of wood and restorative environments. Solid log construction, a natural indoor microclimate, and pleasant acoustics create a home where both body and mind can slow down during the day and at night.

Healthy Living

People spend up to 88-90% of their time indoors - at home, at school and at workplaces. That is why the building itself has a significant impact on human wellbeing.

Enjoy a relaxing holiday in harmony with nature.

Authentic log walls and large windows opening to nature create a double nature effect that calms the mind and supports wellbeing. Thanks to the moisture -balancing  properties of massive log walls, log is a naturally safe material choice for cabins that are occasionally left unheated.

Natural warmth in the heart of winter.

The log structure stores heat and releases it evenly, making the building comfortable even in a harsh northern winter. At the same time, solid log wood creates a warm and calming atmosphere where you can relax and leave everyday life behind.

Logs support wellbeing everywhere

Log construction is not only for homes and for holidays. Its positive qualities also extend to workplaces, schools, daycare, and care facilities, where comfort, good indoor air quality, and a calming atmosphere support everyday functionality and overall wellbeing.

Healthy Indoor Climate and Calm Acoustics

Experiences from the Pudasjärvi Log Campus demonstrate how the natural properties of log walls support everyday wellbeing. The antibacterial qualities of solid logs, together with their ability to balance temperature and humidity fluctuations, contribute to a pleasant and stable indoor climate.

Log structures also enhance acoustics by effectively absorbing sound and reducing noise levels. The result is a calm and comfortable environment that supports both learning and working.

A Provenly Calming Environment

Kontio has delivered numerous schools and both public and private daycare centres where a healthy and safe environment has been a key starting point for procurement. Kontio’s Healthy Living concept is based on the natural properties of solid logs, such as good indoor air quality, pleasant acoustics, and a low chemical load.

These effects are also supported by an Austrian school study, which found that students’ heart rate and perceived stress levels were clearly lower in wood‑based classrooms compared to conventional classrooms.

A workplace that is more than just a place to work.

The pleasant indoor air, calm acoustics, and natural atmosphere created by logs support concentration, wellbeing, and meaningful work. They turn the office into a place where people feel comfortable and want to come to work day after day.
